Kill Devil Derby Brigade made their first public appearance yesterday at the 22nd Annual Kelly’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Months of hard work and planning culminated in an amazing day for the league!
Upon arriving at the parade staging area, all of our derby girls and our awesome support staff had the float decorated in record time. We made the most of the beautiful albeit chilly day and once our skates starting rolling we forgot all about the wind and focused on the 10,000+ spectators waiting to see us roll by.
After skating a mile and a half from Nags Head Fishing Pier to Driftwood Drive,
Kill Devil Derby Brigade had slapped thousands of hands, distributed thousands of fliers, thrown 10+ bags of candy to eager children [and adults], and skated numerous laps around the float. We heard more times than anyone could count “Roller Derby? We have a roller derby team?” – “I didn’t know we had a roller derby team?” – “You girls are awesome!”.
We would like to thank all of the spectators who came out to see the parade and all of the fans who cheered for us, encouraged us, and showed their love for us with comments, emails, and friend requests! We may not have won any awards but from the looks of it we’ve won over the Outer Banks, and that is worth more than any prize.
Keep your eyes and ears open for more news about the Kill Devil Derby Brigade – we’re here to stay!
